ASUS Z390 Maximus XI Extreme and Gene spotted

The Gene is back!

During the past few days we have covered most of ASUS' upcoming Z390 based motherboards. Apparently the company still has some more models up its sleeve, since now images on the ASUS Z390 Maximus XI Extreme and Maximus XI Gene have surfaced.

According to latest leaks the ROG Maximus Z390 lineup includes five models: the ROG Maximus XI Formula and the Hero which are top-tier motherboards, the ROG Maximus XI Code has been geared towards gaming, the ROG Maximus XI Extreme is the absolute flagship on an E-ATX PCB and the ROG Maximus XI Gene fills the mATX gaming niche.

Compared to the previous generation, the Z390 Maximus XI Extreme has received an overhaul once again. While the Z370 version featured a full cover block, which sat on top of the CPU socket, the Z390 version doesn’t sport this feature. Layout wise we see three full-sized and metal-strengthened PCIe slots, eight SATA ports and at least two M.2 slots. Furthermore, due to the DIMM.2 slot, we expect to see the ROG DIMM.2 card, which can be equipped with up to two M.2 SSDs.

The Z390 Maximus XI Gene is based on the microATX form factor and despite the size there appears to be an insane amount of features. There is a large number of 4-pin PWM fan headers, onboard buttons and a debug display. Furthermore the tiny OLED display is here again no only on the Gene but also on the Extreme and compared to the previous generation it looks a bit more sophisticated. Storage wise we see one ROG DIMM.2 slot, four SATA ports and one M.2 slot. Despite the fact that the upcoming Gene would offer enough space to support two full-size PCIe slots there is only one, which means dual-GPU setup are not possible with this board.
